Nothing really new here, but CVG takes a look at a looming problem that we’re all aware of: Zelda games don’t sell as well as they used to – in both Western markets and (especially) in Japan. As great as Twilight Princess was, many fans experienced the same aftertaste in their mouths as they did after completing Ocarina of Time nearly a decade ago (which in turn resembled A Link to the Past). CVG acknowledges that many Zelda games today are Zelda games simply because Nintendo incorporates such familiar aspects of the series into each game. We get the same characters, same items, and same basic plot. Eventually Nintendo could milk this formula dry, running this masterpiece series into the mud.
The issue remains. Nintendo can’t continue making repetitive Zelda games. We still totally adore Zelda but eventually the appeal will tire and the series risks bombing. Nintendo needs to take the bold step and inject something totally new into Zelda. We’re not talking about a couple of new items, or a new location – that’s been done. We mean a significant change that affects the whole structure and gameplay.
Head on over to read the rest of the article. Again, nothing new, but in case the impending case of the Zelda series becoming static has slipped your mind, let CVG remind you that change is necessary and that it (hopefully) is on its way.
