Rumor: Nintendo Power is of a dying breed

It’s no secret that gaming websites and blogs such as The Tanooki can provide news to the public much faster than magazines like Nintendo Power can. Sure, they can put much more time into writing their articles in Nintendo Power, and it’s great for freebies like fold-out posters, stickers, and occasional DVDs with Zelda trailers in Dolby 5.1.

According to IGN’s sources, Nintendo of America has told those involved with the Nintendo Power publication to look for new work by this September. It has been suggested that Nintendo Power may be undergoing a restructuring (separate from their reimaging a mere couple of years ago) or worse – the magazine publication may be shutting down after a nearly 20-year run.

It’s still a rumor, of course. If it turns out to be true and Nintendo is indeed underway with mass layoffs and the shutting down of Nintendo Power, it raises the question of “Why?” Nintendo may have been at a severe low back in 2003, but they’ve more than rebounded by now and Nintendo Power isn’t likely a financial burden so much as a hindrance. Perhaps Nintendo Power will become an online entity, providing news to the internet public and competing with the likes of IGN, GameSpot, and The Tanooki.

I have had this discussion several times about why gaming magazines continue to exist.

Clearly they are no longer our main source for news, but this a good thing. In the past few years, magazines have restructured themselves to put a heavier focus on original articles, interviews, and other cool features.

Take a look at EGM. 5 years ago, at least 30 pages were dedicated to game previews every issue. Now they just toss all the game previews onto 1up.com, which leaves more room for their featured stories and other content that has replaced game previews. Many game magazines have done the same thing, which makes me continue to yearn for my newest issues to arrive in my mailbox for my bathroom reading.

Don’t go away Nintendo Power. We love you. Besides, the community section is the best part of the magazine.

i’ve been waiting for this for awhile. i am a subscriber, but i wouldn’t be surprised to see it go. i would be pretty indifferent i guess. it used to be the only source for insider info, previews, and walkthroughs. once a month. and the excitement of a new issue was glorious. now, i can pull up more current info every hour, and by the time the issue comes out it’s already outdated for the most part. it’s sad, but true.

i love NP, but i understand if it goes. i only hope they put the old issues up on the wii channels for free.

“i only hope they put the old issues up on the wii channels for free.”

This is an amazing idea, although it would probably never happen.

Now if only I could find that first issue of NP somewhere in one of my many many many boxes at home….

    Greatest cover ever!

Totally! The little clay Mario cover?? Mm hm!

I hope this is a rumor, I really do! I am quite fond of Nintendo Power and the people that work there, and would have nothing to look forward to in the mail! Call me old fashioned, but I like having an actual magazine to flip through!!
