Bungie fires back at Shigeru Miyamoto

Joystiq was able to speak with Bungie’s Frank O’Connor about several topics but closed by asking about Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto claiming that he could make ‘Halo’ if he wanted, but that he chooses not to.

One final question: last week, Shigeru Miyamoto said in an interview with Geoff Keighley in Entertainment Weekly that he could make Halo.

Yeah, well. I just want to go on the record and say that Bungie is hard at work on a side-scrolling platform game featuring some plumbers — I’m not going to say what their ethnicity is, it’s none of anyone’s business — but we took that as a gauntlet, a sort of glove slap, and we’re going to respond in 2D scrolling style. That’s all I’m saying.

Sheesh. Talk about bitter. I get how they took Shiggy’s comments to offense, but jeez, I’m pretty sure he wasn’t slamming Halo specifically. I’m pretty sure Miyamoto could have said Gears of War or Perfect Dark or any other kind of FPS and he would’ve gotten the same point across. He doesn’t make games he knows audiences keep demanding; he finds new kinds of fun that he thinks audiences will take a liking to. He’s not trying to call out Bungie for making Halo or anything of the sort.

Personally I’m glad Miyamoto said what he said. Video games, for the most part, have become really stale and that includes Halo and its numerous clones.

Also, joystiq conducted the interview so that takes it a notch down in credibility as far as I’m concerned. Their whole purpose as a website is to pit their readers against each other and start “flame wars” to get more hits. They never have anything to add to the dialogue except bile. Sites like that are the reason I’m semi-ashamed of being a gamer

I agree with the above poster. It seems like all you see anymore are shooters and racing games. It’s not like Halo has done anything grand. It just has a really solid multiplayer but not much else. Honestly, unless you have someone else to play with/against (besides 12 year olds who don’t know any other words beyond four letters) it’s not really all that appealing after a while.

Regardless of any sort of fanboyism’s and opinions on what is better or not. I believe Miyamoto takes game developement from a different point of view. Instead of making what sells to pay the bills, Shiggy is simply making what he wants and what he finds enjoyable to make. I wish I had that kind of job ;)

I think Joystiq and the fanboy sites are pretty good sources for information, and some of the staff are really nice. However, there is a lot of flaming going on there as Joystiq tends to be biased towards Nintendo and Microsoft and members from PSPfanboy go to flame at DSfanboy and vice versa. Sure, Miyamoto may be extremely full of himself, but he earned it big time. If it weren’t for him, either gaming would be dead, or would be comprised of only boring Halo clones and it would only be a small niche market instead of the mainstream monstrosity it is now.

Oh poo. Last time I leave an encouraging comment…

On that note, Bungie should be bending over backwards to kiss Shiggy’s ass. R-E-S-P-E-C-T, boy.
