Iwata cracks the whip on Nintendo of America

In the financial briefing translation, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata explains that the American market has seemingly been the slowest to take in the new market changes, noticeably with the Nintendo DS. For a while, Nintendo Europe was selling the handheld at a much faster rate than Nintendo of America was. In addition, Brain Age sales continue to remain healthy on the other side of the pond.

When I received a report from the U.S. that they sold 1 million Pokémon Diamond & Pearl already, I asked them, “why did you sell only 10,000 Brain Age last week, when Europe sold through 30,000?” This is a typical example of how I communicate with our people in the U.S. If that segment of customers is encouraged to buy a significant amount, we will be able to see the real market change.

Iwata acknowledges that Pokémon will continue to sell into the stratosphere, but that one gaming franchise isn’t enough to expand the gaming population as they plan to. He has no worries for the Wii, however, as America has taken a liking to the Wii unlike any other region has.
