Strikers Charged won’t let you play your best friend in Japan

Looks like another limitation for the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection’s online play for the Wii. Or, if it’s not a limitation, it’s a potentially worry that could get in the way of implementing worldwide play of some amazing games in the future.

The latest issue of the Official Nintendo Magazine contains the disappointing revelation from Mario Strikers Charged director Mike Inglehart that the game will not allow online play between different regions (Japan, North America, Europe, Australia), in order to prevent possible lag issues in the game.

Obviously, due to Wi-Fi’s slightly lower speed and reliability, this is probably just a precaution for faster games such as Mario Strikers. Slower Wii games should have no problem with online play between regions in the future. But if Nintendo is taking this precaution to avoid lag in the faster-paced games, where does that leave the online fate for the lightning fast Super Smash Bros. Brawl?
