The Wii-Mote Will Be Useless

Andrew Groen over at Cinema Blend has written a new article concerning the Wii’s unique and innovative controller, and how it, in a sense, may actually limit developers. Excerpt below.

I predict with some certainty that Wii will follow very closely in patterns to the DS. It will gain enormous popularity (especially in Japan) and for a while everyone will try to incorporate Wii specific mechanics into their games. Sooner or later though developers will realize that having a couple innovations in your controller in effect actually limits your possibilities because it forces them down a narrow path of tools to work with.

The article does make some very great points, some of which could pose a potential problem to Nintendo if not handled properly. It’s important to keep in mind, however, that the unique control schemes for the DS and Wii weren’t necessarily created to just toss in gimmicky controls and call it something new. Their intention was to simplify games by allowing game control to be more intuitive, lessening the need to worry about how you’re controlling the game and opening up the system to people that are afraid of typical game controllers.

Plus, there’s the classic controller! All these people worry so much haha. Classic’s can be used for traditional games.
