The Wii remote is different than every other game controller before it. Now that we’ve broken ground with that information, it’s easy to realize that the control schemes to game genres of the past will not carry over quite as easily as they used to. How does this affect some genres? Are some now unplayable? Bona Fide takes a look. Excerpt and link below.
Fighting games, descended from the original arcade hits “Street Fighter†and “Mortal Combat†nearly always relied on a cluster of buttons all positioned relatively close together for easy access. The Wii unfortunately does not accomplish this well at all. The buttons are too far apart from each other (some being on different controller implements altogether) to perform any type of meaningful button combination. In addition, fighters which take place on a 2d or even pseudo 3d plane don’t allow for successful and intuitive motion controls.
