The Wiimote: What works, what doesn’t, and what can be done

We’ve seen a few articles pop up recently complaining about the Wii remote’s faults and imprecision. In response, Shamoozal’s Phil has written up a detailed article looking at games where the remote schemes work and don’t work, and points out that control setups sometimes work and don’t work with tradition game controllers as well. In addition, he actually points out ways that the “problem” can be fixed in the future through constructive criticism, unlike many recent articles that simply criticize.

For some reason, when I think about learning these moves, I can’t help but think back to the time when I taught myself how to pull off a Dragon Punch in SF2. Street Fighter is critically acclaimed, steep learning curve at all, but in this day and age? SSX Blur is panned because of the time required to learn how to do the moves. Blur is by no means a perfect game, and it does have its share of problems, but I wouldn’t place the uber moves as the source of the problems. Are gamers simply unwilling to deal with a new type of learning curve?
