Wii remote not good enough

Joystiq brings up a problem Wii owners everywhere are starting to realize: the Wii remote isn’t as accurate as players would like, and it’s making games frustratingly hard.

Gamers who crave a deeper challenge have to settle for battling incomprehensible controls. Wii Sports Boxing is certainly “difficult,” but that’s because the best strategy is “Flail your arms like a Muppet on PCP.” In Wii Sports Golf, you can take the exact same swing five times in a row and get wildly different results each time. And then there’s Cooking Mama. Here’s a tip: go into your real-world kitchen, and cook some actual food. It’ll be about 9,000 times less frustrating, and might result in you eating something healthier than your regular diet of Slim Jims and Funyuns.

Have you managed to adjust? Or do you still wish the Wii remote were more accurate that we’ve seen it to be? Should developers reduce the margin of error and up the sensitivity, possibly alienating those who aren’t as experienced?

Pointing is great, it’s the gestures that cause me problems. CoD3 being a case in point.

Well yeah obviously its not as good as we would like it to be. But you have to realize this is the first of its kind its just opening doors for future game systems that will turn out to be like the real thing.

yeah most my wiimote gestures are fine, it is the nunchuk that i have to exagerate my motions. The wiimtoe is more sensitive and has more stuff in it.

I have adapted though. Sometimes it’s just the lighting, like red steel is very sensitive to light.

is there any chance that this “problem” will be solved in future games as developers get better used to the wiimote?

i got rid of warioware because of this. i just knew that i’d lose around one of every five micros just because.

    it got too annoying.

It’s not a hardware problem with the remote, it’s the developers not having figured out how to program for it yet.

I think this guy in peculiar needs to check his components/set-up. I totally disagree with the Wii Golf Chaos theorem he stated, I for one can get the ball to go where I want, and I bet that has a lot to do with actually knowing how to swing a club. That said, I think there is some truth to a certain looseness to the controls in the games available. It’s a very challenging job to fine-tune HCI and better attempts to map actions to player motion will appear as years go by.

i somewhat agree with the article as i recently rented tiger woods 07 and while i’ve become used to certain aspects of the game as far the remote not being quite as sensitive as i would like (ie. i find it extremely difficult to take a swing less than 60%) the putting can drive a man to drink at times. i’ll take one practice swing and it’ll show my putt going about 15 ft, i try to cut back a bit and take a smaller swing and all of sudden it’s shows 47 ft. frustrating to say the least.
