Super Mario Bros. 3 in the Library of Congress?

I posted a story not too long ago about a committee headed by Stanford University’s Henry Lowood selecting a list of ten games they believed to have the most cultural and historical significance. I skimmed the article to get the basic idea of the article, focusing more on the section talking about Super Mario Bros. 3 being on the list.

It appears that I missed about a paragraph near the beginning of the initial New York Times story explaining the purpose of this committee and what the list they came up with was for. Apparently the list was a proposal of games to preserve in the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress intends to preserve various forms of digital media, and the special committee was formed to suggest a small set of video games for the collection.

Imagine that. Tanooki Mario will be preserved for generations and generations to come.
