I’ve heard it said that Yuji Naka holds NiGHTS so close to his heart much in the way that Steven Spielberg does for E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial. Both can be considered the masterpieces of their careers. Naka has gone to say that a NiGHTS sequel would never be made if it were nothing more than a graphical upgrade and a new story.
Well, the Wii is here. Ever since the new control scheme was revealed for the Wii, fans have been calling for a new NiGHTS to take advantage of the new control. A new NiGHTS game with updated graphics, an epic story, and a new, intuitive and innovative control scheme to take advantage of the Wii remote seemed more likely than ever.
The Official Nintendo Magazine printed a teaser page saying a new game would be revealed next month, and all signs pointed to NiGHTS. After the news broke out, ONM was quick to remind everyone that no specific game was announced just yet, but did not deny the NiGHTS claim. Now, however, it seems that SPOnG has obtained everything short of an official confirmation:
This morning we’ve spent a good deal of time chasing up contacts at Sega, Nintendo and elsewhere and we are glad to be the first to confirm 100% that there IS a totally new NiGHTS title for Wii in the works (i.e. it’s not just NiGHTS coming to Virtual Console or whatever). As is the case with these things, nobody was happy to go officially ‘on the record’ with this, suffice to say that SPOnG will be getting the official word with full details of the game in the very near future, so stay tuned for that.
If SPOnG is right, this game will be on the shopping lists of many fans out there. Please kind in mind, however, that until SPOnG can produce a reference, we may have to wait until ONM can confirm whether or not the rumor is true next month. However, I do hope that the original NiGHTS into Dreams is eventually added to the Virtual Console, or included on the game disc for the new NiGHTS title. It’s a rare beauty that many people never got to play.
