Player names removed from VC Tecmo Bowl
Following the removal of the password system in Kid Icarus, another game has some significant changes for the VC iteration. It appears that Tecmo Bowl for the Virtual Console has had all the players’ names removed, likely for legal reason. The game doesn’t have nor has it ever had an NFL license, but at the time it had a Player’s Association license to use real names in the game.
While not a huge deal, it holds significance in that minor details will continue to be made in future VC iterations of our favorite classics. This may be permissible in games like Mario Kart 64 or Ocarina of Time, where hardware obstacles such as the Classic Controller’s lack of a Controller Pak or Rumble Pak render some features unusable, but in games like Kid Icarus and Tecmo Bowl, it means some of our games won’t be available just as they were 20 years ago.
Let’s hope Super Mario Bros. 3 isn’t changed too drastically…
