Merrill Lynch predicts Wii to take over America by 2011

The Wii is no fad according to Merrill Lynch analyst Yoshiyuki Kinoshita. By 2011, the Wii will be in almost 30 percent of all American homes. In Japan, almost a third of all homes will have the Wii!

An unlikely prediction indeed, but definitely an encouraging sign for once about the future of the Wii.

How unlikely? PS and PS2′s global sales were roughly 40% the population of the US, and if the Wii really does expand the market and top the console wars this time around, that number will be much higher, and it’ll start to approach the Merrill Lynch predictions.

I think 30% might be pushing it. That would mean around 95 million homes would have to have a Wii. That’s a lot of systems, even if the Wii comes out on top this time.

This isn’t a knock against the Wii at all, I just don’t believe our country is capable of 95 million of us owning a Wii.

yeah i dunno about 30%…40% is surely pushing it with the PS2.

Apparently I messed up the math for the 95 million home thing. So let’s drop it down to 40-50 million homes. Even then, it might not be possible.
