1UP has a new feature up, covering the Super Nintendo in all its glory. It’s a good read, so head on over to read up on some of the best games on the Super Nintendo, and even what went on behind the scenes during the SNES days.

It seemed that simply having the best graphics wasn’t enough to keep gamers interested for long. In the early ’90s, the world was realizing the potential of the CD-ROM format. Soon enough, everyone wanted a CD-ROM for their computers∧ their consoles. With Sega and NEC developing CD-ROM add-ons for their systems, Nintendo eventually followed suit. They went to Sony, the maker of the SNES sound chip, to collaborate on a new SNES-compatible CD-based platform, to be called “Play Station.” But the involvement of two bigheaded industrial giants sealed the system’s fate. Sony stressed control over the CD manufacturing and other facets of the system, while Nintendo balked at relinquishing power to another corporation. Heads butted and work progressed slowly.
