Wii beats PS3 and 360 launches in US, loses December

According to NeoGAF, NPD sales numbers have just come in, announcing that Nintendo has sold 1.1 million units at retail between launch and the new year. Sony’s PlayStation 3 came in second at 687,300 units between launch and the new year. Compared with the Xbox 360 launch in Nov. 2005, Microsoft sold 607,343 units between launch and the end of 2005. Kotaku notes that Nintendo’s launch numbers are nearly double the other two combined.

In addition, the Nintendo DS had about a 178,705 unit lead over the Sony PSP this time last year. As of NPD’s report, Nintendo has widened the gap in the US by taking a 2.5 million unit lead.

However, looking at December 2006 sales alone (eliminating both PS3 and Wii launch days/weeks), both the Wii’s 604,000 and the PS3′s 490,700 fell short to the Xbox 360′s 1.1 million for December. At this point, it’s hard to pinpoint all the factors, though I’m personally willing to bet supply had a big role in the numbers (at least for Wii and 360). However, all of these numbers are distantly behind the PlayStation 2 (1.4 million) and the Nintendo DS (1.6 million).
