Super Mario Bros. coasters

Published by Christian under Nintendoness

Coasters are a wonderful thing. Or at least, I think so. But I’m the kind who actually makes people use them.

Craftacular has some Mario-themed coasters that they made using Perler Beads, and they turned out quite awesome. Hit the link for detailed how-to instructions!

Wii or DS?

Published by Christian under Nintendoness

Reefinyateef over at WiiNintendo.net talks about how the Wii has taken a toll on his gaming life. Has the same happened to any of you?

The laundromat, the bathroom, and the subway. As of late, these are the only three places where I’ve been able to get down on the DS loving. The Wii has completely taken over my home gaming experience. No more laying on my ass and playing several sessions of Clubhouse Games bowling online – now I find myself mixing a little Wii Sports and Red Steel to calm the nerves after a day at work. And it’s not only my DS gaming that’s suffering – several of my favorite PC games, such as FEAR, Need for Speed Underground, and UT2004, have sat untouched for weeks.

I finally said enough is enough, and I tore myself away from the television to work on Starfox Command. I was really into this game before it came out, and I love trying to find all of the endings and missions. However, I’ve been on the same storyline since – well, before the Wii.

What about you? Has the Wiimote managed to pry that cold, hard stylus from your hands?

USB PowerGlove

Published by Christian under Nintendoness

RetroZone, the same people bringing us NES and SNES controller adaptors for use with the Wii Virtual Console, have come up with a USB PowerGlove. Unfortunately for the mass market, their “RetroGlove” isn’t used for just anything. But for those of us with music sequencing and production experience, the RetroGlove can be used as a MIDI input device.

Hopefully this wonderful little gizmo works with Sibelius. I’d have the coolest way to work on my composition projects out of everyone in my Music Theory class!

Sidhe Interactive Working on Nintendo Game

Published by Christian under Nintendoness

070131sidhelogo.jpg

An article from PeteandMegan.com:

In breaking ‘not really news’ Mario Wynands, Managing Director of Sidhe Interactive confirmed for me that despite only producing games for the PS2, PS3 and PSP up to this point, they are indeed working on a game for one of the Nintendo consoles (Wii or DS).

He would not confirm what they’re working on, what device it’s for, or even when they’re going to tell us more, but even this tidbit is exciting news for me. My only concern is that it may not be an original game, but could perhaps be a port of Jackass for the Wii. While this would please some, I’d like to see another original IP, and see it exclusive to the Wii or DS.

Could it be the much desired Wii Cricket? They did develop the two popular Rugby League games, so they do have a sports heritage. That would be huge…
Sidhe Interactive (pronounced she interactive after some mythical creature) has had a busy time lately. Their horse racing game, Melbourne Cup Challenge was released in October, Gripshift came to the PS3 earlier this month and we understand that work is winding down on Jackass.

Games That Sell While Others Languish

Published by Christian under Wii

070131playingwii.jpg

I think this was the other part of the New York times article I report on earlier. New York Times has an article surrounding recent reports from Nintendo and Sony concerning their financial gains and losses.

The Wii, which uses an innovative wireless controller to translate the players’ motions onto the screen, has upset the order of the video game world. In electronics stores and elsewhere, there are growing signs that the Wii has taken the lead in buzz and sales over another new console, the Sony PlayStation 3, which offers new superlatives in processing power and graphics.

The competitive picture became clearer on Tuesday, when Sony reported disappointing profits that industry analysts attributed largely to the expensive and shaky rollout of the PlayStation 3 and lukewarm demand for the complex machines. By contrast, Nintendo said last week that its own third-quarter sales were up 40 percent from a year earlier, buoyed by Wii sales.

Nintendo tops Amazon popularity poll

Published by Christian under Nintendoness

The MCV article by Neil Long:

Nintendo Wii has eclipsed Star Wars and iPod as the most-searched for terms on Amazon.co.uk in 2006, with Brain Training on DS coming out on top as the biggest selling game.

Even though the Wii has only been available since December 8th in the UK, it still proved to be the most popular search term in Amazon’s 2006 poll, with a huge 300,000 searches in just one week during the Christmas period.

Amazon’s top ten selling titles of last year revealed that games buyers increasingly plumped for more family friendly titles, with Brain Training, Lego Star Wars II and The Sims 2: Pets claiming the top three spots, while Animal Crossing, The Sims 2: Open for Business, New Super Mario Bros and The Sims 2 took fifth, sixth, seventh and tenth place respectively.

The only other games to have made into the top ten were football titles, with FIFA ’07, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 and Football Manager 2007 named as the fourth, eighth and ninth best selling games of 2006.

The dominance of family titles marks a significant change in games buying habits, says Amazon’s report: “As systems such as the Nintendo Wii and DS expand the appeal of gaming beyond the traditionally perceived audience of teenage boys, sales of videogames on Amazon.co.uk are reflecting a real change in the types of games Brits want.”

“2006 saw top-selling violent games of the past, such as Grand Theft Auto and Medal of Honour, replaced by more family-friendly titles with broader appeal.”
